You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changing the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Next, consider whether your exhaust pipe is clogged. This is especially a problem with two stroke scooters. The unburned fuel/oil mixture builds up in the exhaust pipe along with carbon over time. If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. It can be difficult to tell if the exhaust pipe is clogged. The easiest way to tell is to remove it and try to start the scooter. It will be a bit loud - two strokes will sound like a chain saw. If it runs, you know were the problem lies.

My Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter Saves Money, Is Easy to Use, Cheap & Great For Environment

If you are an adult who wants to save gas money doing local errands and short local trips under 10 miles round-trip, you might want to consider using an electric scooter, a cheap, hassle free , excellent method of transportation that helps the environment too. I use the Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter (Schwinn S-1000) which is perfect for me. Licenses are not required in most places for the Schwinn S-1000 (though I would check locally) and about the only thing you really need is a helmet and to weigh under 250 pounds.

I am a total clutz and the S-1000 is incredibly easy to use as the balance is so good and the ride is super comfortable. It took me 1 hour of practice in an empty lot and I've ridden the scooter ever since, easy as pie. Believe it or not, I prefer to ride in the street in the bike lanes where the ground is smooth rather then going over the cracking sidewalks. The scooter goes up to 15 miles per hour and you can go as far as 15 miles with it till the battery is empty, though I think 10 miles is a more reasonable expectation. Charging the battery is super easy as you just use a small charger connected to any electric outlet in your home and connect it to your scooter. Takes about 10 seconds to plug in and about 6 hours to charge. The battery lasts about 6 months, and costs about $125 for a new one and is very easy to put in requiring no mechanical skills.

What I like about the Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter is it's cheap, around $400 or so- it will probably cost you $50 for a bike place to put it together, and requires little maintenance primarily because of its direct drive system. I had an earlier Schwinn Electric Scooter with a Cable drive system, and the cables kept getting tangled up and it was costing me $75 a pop to fix. With the Schwinn S-1000, after about 8 months, I've had no repairs or maintenance charges, which I attribute to its direct drive system.

I would recommend you get your local bike shop to put a small basket on the back of the scooter if you do errands because I don't believe Schwinn Electric Scooters still come with baskets. Most of the time, because the balance of the Stealth 1000 is so good, I just put any packages on the front part of the floorboard where they seem to balance perfectly.

For local travel, the Schwinn Stealth 1000 is the greatest thing since sliced bread too me.

Given that most scooters only take a quart of oil - what is the cost of a quart? Even the very best synthetic oil is only $5 a quart. If you have a 125/180/200cc Yamaha, you will also need a ~$6 oil filer. That's only $10! Is that cheap or what? As for oil, use a top quality oil made for smaller engines. This issue doesn't come up very often. However, at high altitudes (above 4000 ft), your scooter will start starving for air. You'll need to place a smaller main jet in the carb, so that it will take in less fuel. A good rule of thumb is to reduce the size of the main jet by 10% and see if that works.

You need to check for a spark. There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way is to remove the spark plug and put it back in the spark plug cap. Then ground it to the engine - you should be able to lay it against a non-painted portion of the engine. Make sure there is good metal-to-metal contact. In a semi darkened area, attempt to start the scooter. You should see a definite spark at the tip of the spark plug. It's hard to see in direct light. If the color of the spark is blue, that means it's a strong spark. A white color is less strong, and a yellow color is weak. Most scooter starting systems are a bit weak (compared to cars). Even a yellow spark should start your scooter just fine.

Does your gasoline smell old? If the scooter has been sitting for over a year or so, the gasoline will turn look more like varnish than gasoline. If so, you'll have some serious cleaning to do. The gasoline will have evaporated for the most part, leaving a sludgy, molasses like substance in the gas tank, petcock, fuel lines, and the carb. All of these parts will have to be cleaned. This is especially a problem in the carburetor. Thoroughly flush out the gas tank and gas lines with new gas.

As you increase the scooter's speed and acceleration, you will find that your brakes, frame, and suspension are probably not up to the task. Replacing all of these parts is quite expensive. If you just want a bit of increased performance for your 50cc scooter, there are probably carb, exhaust pipe, and variator (gearing) changes you can make. You might be able to find a big bore kit, so that you can increase the engine displacement from 50cc up to around 70cc.

Fuel/air mixture. The last thing is the fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If the scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. Ask the seller when it last ran. If it's been more than ~3 months, you should clean out the fuel system and the carb. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. I've been able to burn old gas with no problem by using it in my truck. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

Remove the fuel and vacuum lines from the petcock to the carb. Place a suitable container under the fuel line and draw air on the vacuum line to the petcock (if so equipped) and see how well the gas flows. The flow has to be more than a trickle. It should be steady and fairly substantial. If you get this flow, then you're ok. Run at least a pint of gas through to help flush the system. If you don't get a flow then it's likely your petcock is clogged. You have to remove it to disassemble and clean it. Carefully reinstall it on the gas tank or you could get a gas leak. Reassemble everything and try to start the scooter. It will take several seconds of cranking to get the gas to work its way from the gas tank to the carb. Hopefully it will start now! :>)

Like most things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the center stand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the center stand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

Scooter Safety...As with all moving vehicles, it's important to be smart about driving one. This includes proper documentation and licensing, and protective gear. Buy a helmet, protective jacket and pants and wear them. You may want to go ala easy rider with just a t-shirt, but you can get quite a road rash even at low speeds.

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

First, remove all of the rubber and gaskets or they will get damaged. After a 20 minute soaking in carb dip, I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar or a piano string, a strand of copper electrical wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're diligent.

Fuel/air mixture. The last thing is the fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If the scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. Ask the seller when it last ran. If it's been more than ~3 months, you should clean out the fuel system and the carb. Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. I've been able to burn old gas with no problem by using it in my truck. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

Double check all connections, then crank for 10-15 seconds. Did it start? Do you hear any popping, like the engine is trying to run? Most scooters will not start if you apply throtte while cranking. Honda scooters tend to start easier if you apply throttle just as the engine catches. Most Yamaha scooters will not accept any throttle at all until they warm up a bit. If the scooter catches, but doesn't start, let it rest ~15 seconds before trying again.

Choosing an Electric Scooter

Electric scooters come in all shapes and sizes. Today�s manufacturers have got the picture and are catering not only to the kids, but also to the older riders as well. With the vast difference in electric scooters, choosing the right one for your particular needs is paramount so that you don�t waste your money.

When choosing an electric scooter, you need to consider a few things first. Once you have taken into consideration these issues, you can make the right decision that best fits you.

Rider Weight: Electric scooters, though more powerful these days, will operate best while carrying the least amount of weight. The more weight that the scooter carries, the more the overall performance will diminish. Choose an electric scooter that can carry your weight plus an extra 50 lbs or more. For example; If the max weight capacity of the electric scooter in question is two-hundred and forty pounds and you weigh one-hundred and eighty pounds, then this is about perfect for your weight.

Average Distance: As goes with weight, the more weight the scooter carries, the less the max distance that the electric scooter will be able go. When choosing an electric scooter, look at the max distance rating. The max distance rating that is advertised is based on an average sized adult, usually one-hundred and thirty pounds, according to the manufacturer. Remember not to expect that max distance if you are a little heavier. Also, what they don�t tell you, that distance will be more determined on factors such as; riding conditions, hills, weather, and how much you use the throttle. A good rule of thumb is to take the max rated distance of say twenty-five miles per charge and realistically expect fifteen to twenty miles on a charge.

So determine which type of electric scooter you are going to purchase based on the average distance that you are going to be traveling between charges.

Actual Use: When looking at purchasing an electric scooter, think about what the scooter will be used for. Once you figure what the scooter will regularly be used for, you can decide which type is best for you. If you are going to be using it during pre-dawn or after dusk hours, then you want to consider getting one with a headlight. If you are going to be just cruising around town, the beach, the campground or your local college campus, then perhaps a two-in-one stand up type with an optional seat that folds down for easy storage would be a better bet. Whatever the type you choose, be sure to keep in mind safety.

As you can see, choosing the right electric scooter for you actually takes a little thought. Whatever you choose, remember the distance, weigh and use rules. Don�t get something that will not satisfy yourself as well as your needs.

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

What's With All The Voltage?

Every day, customers either come in the store or call and ask about this scooter and that scooter. I ask everyone the same thing. What are you planning on using your scooter for? Some as transportation to work or school and more than most, the scooter is for their kids. But what scooter should you buy and what�s the big deal about voltage?

Electric scooters over the years have evolved tremendously. One thing that voltage plays a major role in is output power. The more voltage, the more output power that is available; but that is not the sole factor that determines power and that is not the only role that voltage plays in your electric scooters.

Lets start with the traditional 12 volt system. Now-a-days, the small kids electric scooters are single twelve volt systems. As you increase in wattage, that is how many watts of power that is generated by your electric scooter engine, the more juice that is required to power that engine more efficiently.

With the interest in faster electric scooters, the 24 volt system was introduced. The 24 volt system is traditionally a trickle-charge system where two 12 volt batteries are simultaneously connected and then the whole system runs the engine, as well as any other add-ons that you have on your electric powered scooter. If your scooter has the traditional headlight, brake light, turn signals and the such, then your battery setup is more than likely a trickle-charge system and these extra add-ons along with the motor require more juice than a simple 12 volt system would be able to support.

The traditional electric powered scooter that has all the extras will be either a 24 volt system or for the heavy duty and longer lasting electric scooters, you will get a much better setup with a 36 volt system.

The higher voltage systems provide more power to carry more weight farther. With a 24 v0lt system, your average electric powered scooter can travel for about ten to fifteen miles; if you�re lucky. The 36 volt systems have reached a maximum of twenty-five to even thirty miles on a single charge. There are some 48 volt systems out there that can travel up to thirty-five miles on a single charge, by those are few.

Simple comparison: Take a 24 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put a two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 12-18 miles, depending on the scooter. Take a 36 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put the same two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 16-24 miles on a single charge.

As you can see, voltage does make a difference when you are talking about the actual distance and the distance that your electric scooter will take you before needing more juice.

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

It is definitely frustrating when you can't get your scooter or moped started. The first thing you'll need to do is to narrow down the problem. In order for your gas scooter to start, it really only needs 3 things:
1...Your scooter needs to spark at the correct time.
2...Your engine needs the proper fuel/air mixture and exhaust flow.
3...You need sufficient engine compression.

Remove the fuel and vacuum lines from the petcock to the carb. Place a suitable container under the fuel line and draw air on the vacuum line to the petcock (if so equipped) and see how well the gas flows. The flow has to be more than a trickle. It should be steady and fairly substantial. If you get this flow, then you're ok. Run at least a pint of gas through to help flush the system. If you don't get a flow then it's likely your petcock is clogged. You have to remove it to disassemble and clean it. Carefully reinstall it on the gas tank or you could get a gas leak. Reassemble everything and try to start the scooter. It will take several seconds of cranking to get the gas to work its way from the gas tank to the carb. Hopefully it will start now! :>)

Guide on how mobility scooters work.

The mobility scooter in a way is like a motor bike or bicycle, there are handles to steer with, a place to sit and in general the mobility scooter will re-act like a bicycle.

The Tiller
The tiller is the main upright strut which is used to steer the mobility scooter like a motor bike. The tiller is adjustable moving towards or away from the seat for comfort so that the user can more easily steer the mobility scooter.

The Controls

The key
The main control of the mobility scooter is the key; this must be switched on before the scooter will operate at all. If when you switch on the mobility scooter it starts to beep, check that the scooter is not in free-wheel mode. If the scooter is, then put the mobility scooter into drive mode and turn on the machine again.

Accelerating/Reversing lever
If you look at the handles of the mobility scooter nearby you will see two teaspoon shaped paddles. These are the levers to make the mobility scooter go forward and backwards, sometimes these are called wig-wag paddles operating the levers with your thumbs will make the scooter go backwards and forwards. Note the mobility scooter will beep as you go backwards to warn others of your manoeuvre. (Each of the levers can operate the mobility scooter forwards and backwards, so if you only have the use of one hand this will present no problem).

Speed control
When you push the lever in just a little you move very slowly, push in more and you go faster. More importantly there is also a speed control dial which allows you to dictate the speed you wish to travel at and the paddles cannot make the scooter go any faster until you increase the speed on the speed controller. Pavement/Road Switch

On some of the larger models there is a switch which is to reduce the speed as you are only supposed to go at 4mph on the pavements and only switch over to the 6-8mph when on the road.

Brakes
You make a mobility scooter stop by doing nothing. As soon as you stop pressing the wigwag, the brakes automatically activate and bring the scooter to a gentle stop. This is called passive braking, and it works even if all the power to the electric scooter is cut off. It is the safest braking system possible and will stop the mobility scooter even on a steep hill. Some scooters will also come with an emergency brake (most class three scooters have this)

Freewheel lever
Each scooter will come with a freewheel lever to permit easy rolling of the scooter when there is no power; this helps if you wish to push the scooter into a corner or down a narrow passage. This is generally found at the back of the scooter and should be demonstrated by your scooter dealer.

The seat
Some people may find it more difficult to transfer to the mobility scooter than into a wheelchair, particularly if it has a fixed seat, but there are features which should be looked for: A 180� swivel seat so it can be turned for ease of transfer but make sure that you can swivel the chair back to the �driving position�.
That the tiller adjusts.
The scooter seat height is adjustable.
Arm rests that can be moved out of the way.

Lights and indicators
Lights are not essential but at night are a safety feature and a flashing light is necessary if you travel on the road, or a white light at the front and a red on the back.

The unburned fuel/oil mixture builds up in the exhaust pipe along with carbon over time. If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

This issue doesn't come up very often. However, at high altitudes (above 4000 ft), your scooter will start starving for air. You'll need to place a smaller main jet in the carb, so that it will take in less fuel. A good rule of thumb is to reduce the size of the main jet by 10% and see if that works.

Mobility Scooters give people independence and allows them to manage a lot of the everyday tasks themselves, such as shopping, going out with friends, going out for �walks� with people, they no longer are housebound.

Please note the following details are based on the law in Spain. The laws may differ in different countries.

The mobility scooters at present are divided into Class 2 and Class 3 vehicles.

Class 2 Mobility scooter vehicles are the smaller scooters, such as the one�s you can dismantle and put into the trunk of a car. These scooters will travel up to speeds of 6.4kph (4mph), and the scooters are allowed to travel on the pavements and to cross over roads only, they are suitable for indoor use as they are smaller and more compact.

For use indoor and outdoor, but scooters are best on even surfaces.
These scooters have a short distance range.
Scooters are less stable.
Scooter seats are not so comfortable.
Available with 3 or 4 wheels.
The scooters can be collapsed/dismantled for transporting.
The scooters are designed to fit easily into a car boot.
Has handles for lifting and are lightweight.
Normally the scooter battery can also be removed for lifting.
Small and compact scooter

Class 3 Mobility scooter vehicles are the larger scooters which are capable of traveling up to 12.8kph
(8mph). These scooters can travel on the pavements but are also allowed to travel on the roads, although you don�t need a driving license to use one, you must obey the rules of the road. If you haven�t driven before it is best to talk to your dealer and arrange for a mobility scooter training course.

Curb climbing of 10cm.
Speed selector switch � pavement setting 4mph (6.4kph) can be flipped up to 6-8mph (12.8kph).

The Difference between 3 and 4 wheel mobility scooters

3 wheel scooter version has a better turning circle and allows turning in smallspaces and round tight corners.
The 4 wheel mobility scooter version is more stable but not as maneuverable.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Next, consider whether your exhaust pipe is clogged. This is especially a problem with older two stroke scooters. The unburned fuel/oil mixture builds up in the exhaust pipe along with carbon over time. If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. It can be difficult to tell if the exhaust pipe is clogged. The easiest way to tell is to remove it and try starting your scooter. It will be a bit loud - two strokes will sound like a chain saw. If it runs with the exhaust pipe off, you know that is the problem.

Meanwhile, heavy duty electric scooters will probably require vehicle lifts to be able to be transported anywhere you go.

Choose an appropriate electric scooter that will give you the benefit of moving independently. Consider all the right factors so you can be sure that you are making the right choice.

First, remove all of the rubber and gaskets or they will get damaged. After a 20 minute soaking in carb dip, I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar or a piano string, a strand of copper electrical wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're diligent.

If the gas tank is not too rusted or dirty, you might be able to get away with just flushing it out. Pour in some fresh gas. But if you are uncertain how old the gas is (even if it smells ok), drain the gas tank, fuel lines, and carb float bowl and refill with fresh gas. I once worked on an Elite 80 with fresh-smelling gas. I could get it to run on starting fluid, but not on gas from the tank. I finally ended up draining all of the old gas and re-filling with fresh gas. The scooter started immediately and run great after that.

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

The mobility scooter in a way is like a motor bike or bicycle, there are handles to steer with, a place to sit and in general the mobility scooter will re-act like a bicycle.

The Tiller
The tiller is the main upright strut which is used to steer the mobility scooter like a motor bike. The tiller is adjustable moving towards or away from the seat for comfort so that the user can more easily steer the mobility scooter.

The Controls

The key
The main control of the mobility scooter is the key; this must be switched on before the scooter will operate at all. If when you switch on the mobility scooter it starts to beep, check that the scooter is not in free-wheel mode. If the scooter is, then put the mobility scooter into drive mode and turn on the machine again.

Accelerating/Reversing lever
If you look at the handles of the mobility scooter nearby you will see two teaspoon shaped paddles. These are the levers to make the mobility scooter go forward and backwards, sometimes these are called wig-wag paddles operating the levers with your thumbs will make the scooter go backwards and forwards. Note the mobility scooter will beep as you go backwards to warn others of your manoeuvre. (Each of the levers can operate the mobility scooter forwards and backwards, so if you only have the use of one hand this will present no problem).

Speed control
When you push the lever in just a little you move very slowly, push in more and you go faster. More importantly there is also a speed control dial which allows you to dictate the speed you wish to travel at and the paddles cannot make the scooter go any faster until you increase the speed on the speed controller. Pavement/Road Switch

On some of the larger models there is a switch which is to reduce the speed as you are only supposed to go at 4mph on the pavements and only switch over to the 6-8mph when on the road.

Brakes
You make a mobility scooter stop by doing nothing. As soon as you stop pressing the wigwag, the brakes automatically activate and bring the scooter to a gentle stop. This is called passive braking, and it works even if all the power to the electric scooter is cut off. It is the safest braking system possible and will stop the mobility scooter even on a steep hill. Some scooters will also come with an emergency brake (most class three scooters have this)

Freewheel lever
Each scooter will come with a freewheel lever to permit easy rolling of the scooter when there is no power; this helps if you wish to push the scooter into a corner or down a narrow passage. This is generally found at the back of the scooter and should be demonstrated by your scooter dealer.

The seat
Some people may find it more difficult to transfer to the mobility scooter than into a wheelchair, particularly if it has a fixed seat, but there are features which should be looked for: A 180� swivel seat so it can be turned for ease of transfer but make sure that you can swivel the chair back to the �driving position�.
That the tiller adjusts.
The scooter seat height is adjustable.
Arm rests that can be moved out of the way.

Lights and indicators
Lights are not essential but at night are a safety feature and a flashing light is necessary if you travel on the road, or a white light at the front and a red on the back.

Let's Look At More 4 stroke scooter

Compression check. If you just acquired the scooter, you should first do a full inspection before you try to get it running. Please see this page on restoration. If this is the case, I'd do a compression check first because it's easy. First check the quantity and condition of the engine oil. Add oil as necessary. I wouldn't change it unless it's terribly dirty. The engine could be bad so you'd waste the oil change. Hook up or purchase a good battery. Leave out the spark plug and crank the scooter for ~5 seconds. This helps to circulate the oil. Let it set for ~15 seconds and do it again. It's not a good idea to continuously crank the starter because it can overheat and wear prematurely. Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the engine is warm, but that's kind of hard to do if the scooter is not running. So just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gague stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

Like most things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the center stand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the center stand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

Thus an electric scooter is far more economical and affordable solution in the long run.
