In the last couple of years, a lot of scooters have turned up for sale on eBay and Craig's List... from Vietnam. There are millions of Italian scoots in SE Asia, and a pretty big business in restoration has grown up around Saigon. Some of them even look pretty spiffy! But, my gawd, the horror stories about these restorations! Home-made parts, kilos of Bondo-like filler, even dangerous things (cracked welds, bad brakes, undersized or parted cables, painted-over or hidden casting failures). WATCH OUT.

So This Is What The Armada 2008 Looks Like

This article has little to do with motorcycles, except that motorcycles were really needed to get there. 11 million people visited the Armada 2008, 2-3 million were present during the sail-out on Monday.
The views were spectacular, with old tall sail ships and tall sail ships passing past us. Thrown in were a few war ships. Nice....

The Dutch Police have put a process in place in one specific city (so far), that enables individuals in a neighborhood to request speed traps to be placed.
For a day, the cops will place the speed trap in that street, and then send the results back to the requester.

If you have an electric choke, check it to make sure it works. Check the resistance between the wires - you should see around 10 ohms or less. Measure the length of the choke assembly. Remove the choke from the carb and plug the wires into a 12V source for 15 minutes. The choke body should be warm. Measure the length again - it should increase by around 1/8".

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Excessive speed is a factor in many accidents. Obey the speed limits and never travel faster than your skill level or than the conditions allow.

You might want to get a performance carb and/or a new exhaust pipe. You'll need to replace these two components (and probably the air box) at the same time to get the best performance increase. The engine is basically just an air pump. The more air you can move through the engine, the more power you get. Adding a bigger carb draws more air (and more fuel) into the engine. But you restrict the amount of added air if you don't change the air box.
